“Pay as You Throw” Faces Opposition: Municipalities Clash with Agriculture Ministry over Waste Tax

There is strong disagreement between the Union of Municipalities and the Ministry of Agriculture regarding the implementation of the “pay as you throw” program for waste management. Municipalities oppose the imposition of a sanitary landfill tax, as they believe that the necessary infrastructure for integrated waste management has not been developed. They also object to the obligation to pass the cost on to citizens. Mayor of Amathous, Kyriakos Xydias, stated that the Ministry of Agriculture informed them that the imposition of the tax is a commitment to the EU, but the municipalities do not agree with this unless the necessary infrastructure is in place first. They believe that imposing the tax without a complete management system will lead to increased costs for citizens. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees requested solutions to land title issues and intervention from the Ministries of Justice and Agriculture to end illegal dumping of construction waste in the Mouttagiaka area. The committee examined problems faced by the community, such as delays in land titling and illegal waste disposal. The Committee Chairman, Nikos Kettiros, stated that there are various phases of titling that have not progressed, and that the Land Registry is working to complete the process. He also referred to problems with land boundaries and efforts to resolve them in cooperation with the Town Planning Department.
