Evros Floods: Settlements at Risk as Embankments Fail – Over 100,000 Acres Underwater

Evros is in a state of emergency due to severe flooding that has caused damage to over 100,000 acres of crops and infrastructure. The crisis is worsened by broken embankments in various areas and the rising water levels of the Evros, Erythropotamos, and Arda rivers due to rainfall and snow in Bulgaria. Authorities are struggling to protect settlements, as the situation deteriorates and there are fears of further damage if more embankments fail. Farmers express fears for the loss of this year's harvest, as large parts of the plain have turned into lakes. The area is reminiscent of the floods of 2015, with damage to roads, agricultural infrastructure, and sports facilities. Ensuring the safety of settlements, restoring infrastructure, and supporting farmers are immediate priorities.
