Kenya Floods: At Least 88 Dead and 34,000 Displaced

At least 88 people have died and approximately 34,000 have been displaced in Kenya due to heavy rainfall that has been affecting the country since the beginning of the month. This year’s rainy season started earlier than usual and is characterized by extreme intensity. Roads in the capital Nairobi and in areas of western Kenya have turned into rivers, causing traffic problems and endangering pedestrians. Deaths are mainly due to drowning and electrocution. The Nyanza River overflowed, causing widespread flooding in the Kisumu area, while authorities have called on residents of areas at risk to evacuate their homes due to fears of a dam collapse. Schools in western Kenya have been evacuated for safety reasons. Climate change is exacerbating extreme weather events in Kenya, with the country simultaneously facing floods in Nairobi and drought in the north. The situation requires immediate humanitarian aid and long-term solutions to address the impacts of climate change.
