The Statistical Authority announced a surplus of €538.8 million for the General Government in January 2026, representing 1.5% of GDP. This surplus is lower compared to January 2025 (€569.3 million or 1.6% of GDP). Total revenue reached €1.551.5 million, an increase of 1% compared to the previous year, mainly due to increased income from income and wealth taxes. Conversely, there was a decrease in taxes on production and imports, as well as in social contributions, interest, and current transfers. Expenditure increased by 4.7% to €1.012.7 million, with the largest increases recorded in social benefits and current transfers. There was an increase in the capital account, while investments in fixed capital amounted to €27 million. A slight decrease was recorded in staff remuneration and paid interest, while there was a significant decrease in subsidies. The Statistical Authority notes that for some entities, the data are based on estimates due to insufficient data submission. These figures provide a picture of the country's fiscal situation at the beginning of the year, indicating a relatively stable course with some fluctuations in revenue and expenditure.
