Environmental Movement Calls for Measures to Halt 'Uncontrolled' Solar Parks

The Environmental Movement of Cyprus expresses serious concerns about the 'uncontrolled' installation of photovoltaic parks on agricultural and forest land in Cyprus. In a statement, the Movement condemns the destruction of forests, the commitment of fertile agricultural land, and the use of state land for commercial photovoltaic parks as unacceptable practices, especially when alternative solutions are available on barren or already built-up land. The Movement also accuses vested interests and corruption, specifically citing the case of the construction of a photovoltaic park by the Church in a forest area in Flasou. It criticizes the invocation of 'agrivoltaics' as a pretext for creating large photovoltaic parks on agricultural land, considering this practice reprehensible. The Environmental Movement calls for the establishment of clear spatial boundaries, strict control of agricultural use, protection of agricultural land, Natura areas and biodiversity, as well as priority to degraded or unproductive land. It emphasizes the need for transparency and accountability in the licensing and installation process of photovoltaic parks. The Movement believes that the uncontrolled expansion of photovoltaic parks threatens the environment, agriculture and the sustainable development of Cyprus.
