MP Criticizes Lack of Action on Organized Crime

AKEL MP Andreas Passiourtidis criticized the government and the Police for their handling of organized crime, stating that “we are tired of statements” and immediate action is needed. Speaking on ASTRA's morning show, Mr. Passiourtidis called on the Minister of Justice and the Police to clarify what they expect from the Parliament to combat crime, pointing out that the Parliament has not received any relevant request or bill. The MP reminded that the Parliament has been waiting for six years for the submission of an amending bill on surveillance, questioning whether this is part of the Minister of Justice's expectations. He stressed that the Parliament is ready to contribute to tackling crime, but needs clear instructions and specific proposals from the executive branch. Mr. Passiourtidis expressed his surprise at the fact that the Police are struggling to identify individuals involved in criminal activities, while these individuals are known and appear in videos. He underlined the need for better cooperation between the various services, including the intelligence services, and for information sharing. Furthermore, the MP condemned the political exploitation of the issue, pointing out that some are trying to present the criminal factions as a matter of foreigners for electoral purposes. He stressed the need for honesty and avoiding the instrumentalization of the problem, as well as the need to tighten procedures in the Supreme Court to prevent the release of repeat offenders.
