Cyprus' Activation After Akrotiri Attack: A 'Deposit' to the EU

A government source stated that the swift and strong response of EU member states following the attack on Akrotiri constitutes a 'deposit from Cyprus' to the Union. Cyprus has the capability and operational efficiency to prevent new incidents at British bases, thanks to military support from Italy, Greece, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. This response gives substance for the first time to Article 42(7) of the EU Treaty, which provides for mutual assistance in the event of an armed attack. This activation, without formal invocation of the article, demonstrates the solidarity and readiness of the EU to address such challenges.
