Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccine Delivered to Turkish Cypriots – Tests Negative in Free Areas

The 500,000 doses of foot and mouth disease vaccine delivered by the European Commission to the Republic of Cyprus were immediately handed over to the Turkish Cypriots. The delivery was made through the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Health at the Ledra Palace crossing. Veterinary Services of the Republic of Cyprus conducted checks for possible cases in the free areas, with negative results. However, there is no information on the situation in the occupied areas, as the Turkish Cypriots do not provide information beyond the vaccination of three cattle breeding units in Lapathos. The Republic of Cyprus is implementing surveillance measures along the ceasefire line. The 500,000 doses of vaccine are intended for the vaccination of small ruminants, namely goats and sheep, and other small ruminant animals. The origin of the foot and mouth disease outbreak in three breeding units in Lapathos remains unknown.
