Collateral Revelations Due to the War in Iran

Although the war in Iran did not start from Cyprus and Greece, it has provided an opportunity to strengthen the geopolitical value of Cyprus and project Greece's power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Greece, by strengthening the national bond, has managed to attract the support of other EU countries. This situation allows Cyprus and Greece to raise issues in the EU, such as the functionality of the mutual defense assistance clause, and to address Turkish expansionism and the occupation of Cyprus. However, the war has also exposed some in Cyprus and Greece who prioritize their individual or party interests. Examples include those who oppose the presence of Greek air and naval forces in Cyprus or those who downplay the positive impact of this presence. Their criticism focuses on trivialities and falsehoods, while they are exploited by Turkish disinformation services. Furthermore, the relocation of six Turkish warplanes to the occupied part of Cyprus, although it does not offset the geopolitical benefits, is an opportunity for initiatives from Cyprus. This relocation violates US law and a meeting with the US ambassador has already been requested. In addition, the issue of imposing sanctions by the EU arises, but requires initiative from Cyprus and Greece. In summary, the war in Iran has created opportunities for Cyprus and Greece to strengthen their geopolitical position and address the challenges in the region, but determination and coordination are needed to fully exploit these opportunities and avoid mistakes of the past.
