Limited Reference to Cyprus Issue After Mitsotakis-Erdogan Meeting

Published February 11, 2026, 17:30

Following the Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting in Ankara, the reference to the Cyprus issue was limited. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke of a "window of opportunity" for restarting dialogue, within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions, while Recep Tayyip Erdogan made no mention of the issue. The meeting focused primarily on Greek-Turkish relations and resulted in the signing of six agreements and a joint declaration. Both leaders agreed on the need to avoid tensions and resolve problems calmly and based on international law. Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of dialogue and avoiding crises, while Erdogan expressed confidence that progress would be made in resolving the interconnected issues in the Aegean Sea from 2023. The agreements signed concern cooperation in the field of culture, the relationship between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs within the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, cooperation between Enterprise Greece and Invest in Turkiye, research and technology, readiness for earthquakes, and the ferry connection between Thessaloniki and Smyrna. The meeting marks an attempt to de-escalate Greek-Turkish relations, with an emphasis on dialogue and finding solutions based on international law. However, the Cyprus issue remains a sensitive topic, with different approaches from both sides.
