Tehran University Suspends Students for Burning Iranian Flag

The University of Tehran has suspended the studies of three students who burned the Iranian flag during recent anti-government protests. The decision was made after the students were identified and a disciplinary council hearing is expected. The protests took place at many universities after the resumption of classes, with students expressing their opposition to the government. The government recognized the students' right to protest, but warned against crossing “red lines.” The protests are a continuation of the mass mobilizations that began in December, initially with economic demands and then, in early January, taking on an anti-government character. The head of the judiciary described the behavior of students who burned the flag as “inappropriate” and warned of prosecution. Classes continue at universities, but some institutions, such as Kharazmi University and branches of Azad University, have announced that classes will be held online, citing the period of Ramadan. The situation remains tense, with the government trying to maintain control and suppress protests.
