University of Virginia: Attacker Shouted “Allahu Akbar” Before Opening Fire

A gunman opened fire in a classroom at the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) building at Old Dominion University in Virginia, killing one military instructor and wounding two others. The attacker, who shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire, was killed by ROTC students. The FBI has characterized the attack as a terrorist act, indicating that the attacker, 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, had previously been convicted of attempting to support the Islamic State. Jalloh had been released in 2024 after serving 11 years in prison. The attack is reminiscent of the 2009 attack at Fort Hood military base, where Nidal Hasan killed 13 people. Authorities are investigating whether the attacker had similar motives. The quick response of the ROTC students, who managed to neutralize the attacker, is believed to have saved lives. Authorities have confirmed that the situation is under control and that the investigation is ongoing.
