Panayiotou: Tools for a Competitive European Agriculture

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, emphasized the importance of equipping the European agricultural sector with the necessary tools to remain sustainable and competitive, within the framework of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. Speaking before the start of the first Council on Agriculture and Fisheries in Brussels, she stated that Cyprus is committed to working for solutions with immediate and positive results for farmers. The agenda includes the strategy for the bioeconomy, the modification of regulations for organic farming, and the launch of the working group for import controls. The Minister also referred to the EU-Mercosur Agreement, emphasizing that the priority is to safeguard the interests of the European agricultural sector and that Cyprus will act as an honest mediator. Finally, she acknowledged the different approaches of the member states regarding the new CAP after 2027, but expressed hope for finding a balance and shaping a strong policy that will support farmers.
