World Day of Juvenile Rheumatic Diseases

March 18th has been established as World Day of Juvenile Rheumatic Diseases, aiming to raise awareness and educate about rheumatic diseases that appear in childhood and adolescence. Rheumatic diseases do not only concern adults, but can manifest from childhood, affecting the health, development and daily life of children. Pediatric Rheumatology is a specialization of Pediatrics that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of a wide range of diseases related to immune system disorders. These diseases can affect the joints, muscles, skin, blood vessels, as well as other organs such as the kidneys, lungs and brain. The spectrum of rheumatic diseases in childhood includes Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Juvenile Dermatomyositis, Scleroderma, Kawasaki disease and Familial Mediterranean Fever. The exact cause of many of these diseases remains unknown, but they are associated with immune system dysfunction. The symptoms of rheumatic diseases in children can be difficult to recognize, as they are often attributed to “growing pains” or transient discomfort. Important symptoms that should mobilize parents are persistent pain or swelling in the joints, stiffness, fever, rashes and intense fatigue. Early diagnosis and specialized pediatric care are vital.
