Former French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin Dies at 88

Former French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin has died at the age of 88, his family announced. Jospin served as head of the French government from 1997 to 2002 and was a prominent figure in the Socialist Party. During his tenure as prime minister, Jospin implemented significant reforms, including the introduction of the 35-hour workweek, universal health coverage (CMU), and the Pact of Civil Solidarity (PACS), which allowed for civil unions between heterosexual and same-sex couples. Prior to becoming prime minister, Jospin served as Minister of Education in the late 1980s and early 1990s. As First Secretary of the Socialist Party, he led the government of the “Pluralist Left” coalition following the 1997 elections. In 2002, Jospin ran for president but failed to reach the second round, facing strong competition from other left-wing candidates. His death marks the end of an era in French political history.
