EU Announces Emergency Aid to Lebanon as Displacement Exceeds 680,000

The European Union announced the dispatch of emergency humanitarian aid to Lebanon, due to the deteriorating situation in the Middle East and the evolving humanitarian crisis in the country. The aid includes food, medical kits, shelter materials, recreation kits, and winter clothing, aiming to cover the urgent needs of those affected. Over 680,000 people have been displaced in recent days due to ongoing hostilities. The distribution of aid will be carried out through the EU's humanitarian partners, the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF. WFP will deliver 404 tons of food to more than 90,000 people, while UNICEF will receive medical and non-food items to cover the needs of over 100,000 vulnerable people. Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hanja Lahib, stated that the EU stands with the people of Lebanon, providing essential goods to those in need. She emphasized that the EU's new Emergency Readiness Fund allows for faster and more effective mobilization of aid. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa expressed deep concern about the impact of the crisis on Lebanon and the need to protect civilians, as well as respect the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
