Palmas: Strategic Autonomy, Maritime Security and Defence at the Forefront of Cypriot Presidency

The Minister of Defence, Vasilis Palmas, presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency to the Security and Defence (SEDE) Committee of the European Parliament. These priorities centre around the strategic autonomy of the EU, maritime security, and strengthening the European defence industry. The Presidency emphasizes the importance of supporting Ukraine, strengthening the defence industry through the European Defence Industrial Programme (EDIP), and protecting critical maritime infrastructure. Additionally, emphasis is placed on security and support for humanitarian operations in the MENA region. Mr. Palmas stressed that strategic autonomy and outward orientation are interconnected and essential for European security.
