Palmas: Ministry of Defence Goals Through SAFE for 2026-2030

Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas presented the annual report of the Ministry of Defence, emphasizing the strengthening of Cyprus's deterrent power, adaptation to new security data in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean, the promotion of critical infrastructure and the utilization of the SAFE program. Particular emphasis was placed on the upgrades of the 'Evangelos Florakis' Naval Base and the 'Andreas Papandreou' Air Base. The Minister referred to the report on the loss of explosives from a firing range, stating that responsibilities have been identified and will be assigned, while police investigations are ongoing. He stressed that these bases are under the exclusive control and ownership of the Republic of Cyprus. Mr. Palmas noted that 2025 was a year of significant transformations, with escalating conflicts and a reshaping of the international security system, due to the Turkish occupation and geopolitical realignments. The Ministry's strategic pursuits focus on strengthening deterrent power, promoting clean environmental practices and digital transformation. Regarding achievements, significant goals were achieved in the field of armaments, such as increasing ammunition reserves, strengthening land and special forces, and upgrading surveillance capabilities. The absorption rate of the budget for defensive shielding reached 95%, demonstrating effective management.
