Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak and Minister's Absence in Brussels

While foot-and-mouth disease is spreading uncontrollably in livestock units in Cyprus, the Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, is in Brussels for the AgriFish Council. The Minister confirmed that she has requested a meeting with European Health Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi to ensure rapid and direct coordination to protect production and farmers. At the same time, a team from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Health has been requested to visit Cyprus. However, domestically, cases are multiplying, with the National Guard called upon to assist in the burial of animals and farmers facing serious economic problems. The situation raises questions about the effectiveness of crisis management and the Minister's presence in Brussels, while investigative investigations are underway for possible criminal offenses. The Minister is focusing on discussions on the Common Agricultural Policy after 2027. At the AgriFish Council, the Minister stressed the importance of food security and strengthening Europe's resilience, as well as the need for adequate support for farmers and the primary sector through the new CAP.
