Ursula von der Leyen: EU-Mercosur Agreement Strengthens Europe in an Era of Instability

The European Union and Mercosur have reached a historic partnership agreement after more than 25 years of negotiations. This agreement creates one of the largest trade zones in the world, covering almost 700 million citizens and representing one-fifth of global GDP. Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the agreement is a strategic message of cooperation in an era of geopolitical divisions and increasing protectionism. It is expected to eliminate billions of euros in tariffs, open up public procurement markets, and strengthen European companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, with new investments and jobs. The agreement is compared to the successful EU-Canada trade agreement, which led to a 70% increase in bilateral trade.
