Von der Leyen and Costa in India for 'Mother of All Deals'

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are in India for the EU-India Summit, aiming to finalize a free trade agreement that would create a market of nearly two billion people. This visit marks an effort by the EU to rebalance its geopolitical and economic relationships, turning its attention to alternative partners given the uncertainty in its traditional collaborations. Von der Leyen and Costa are the guests of honor at the celebrations for India's 77th Republic Day, highlighting the political upgrade of EU-India relations. Von der Leyen stated that a successful India contributes to global stability, prosperity, and security. The free trade agreement is expected to eliminate approximately 4 billion euros in tariffs, facilitating investment and trade expansion. Bilateral trade between the EU and India has already nearly doubled in the last decade, reaching 120 billion euros annually. Antonio Costa emphasized that India is a critical partner for the EU and that both sides share the responsibility to protect the rules-based international order. The summit represents a significant opportunity to deepen cooperation and achieve tangible results.
