Ustel: Issue of Federation is Closed Following Christodoulides' Interview

The president of the KEE and 'prime minister' of the Turkish Cypriots, Unal Ustel, stated that the issue of federation is closed, responding to an interview given by the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, to 'Phileleftheros'. Ustel argues that the only viable solution for Cyprus is the recognition of two sovereign states, rejecting any other approach, including federation. He expressed the view that Christodoulides' statement regarding the importance of UN resolutions constitutes an implicit admission that no solution other than federation will be accepted, which he categorically rejects. Simultaneously, former Turkish Cypriot negotiator Erhan Ercin, in an interview with 'Yeni Duzen', urged the Turkish Cypriot side to be proactive in Europe, while describing the Greek Cypriot side's attempt to join the Schengen zone while the Cyprus issue remains unresolved as a mistake.
