Tariq Rahman, leader of the Nationalist Party (BNP) in Bangladesh, is set to become prime minister following his victory in the elections. The victory was confirmed with the recognition of defeat by the largest Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami. These elections are the first since the 2024 uprising and mark the return of Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile. Alongside the elections, voters approved a package of democratic reforms through a referendum, aiming to strengthen democracy and prevent single-party regimes. However, the new government faces significant challenges in the economy and internal security.
