Human Rights Organizations Asked to Register as Lobbyists

The Deputy Ministry of Welfare is requesting that organizations promoting social welfare and human rights issues register with the Lobbyists' Register of the Independent Authority Against Corruption, in order to be able to meet with the Deputy Minister or high-ranking Public Officials. This move has sparked strong reactions, as organizations argue that this requirement is unjustified, given that their work concerns the protection of human rights and the improvement of social policies, and not the promotion of economic interests. The President of the Pan-Cypriot Organization of Paralytics, Dimitris Lambrianidis, expressed concern about the difficulty this requirement creates for the operation of organizations and questioned the possibility of their involvement in corruption issues. Furthermore, it was recalled that the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare had been criticized in the past for illegal consultation procedures with disability organizations during the preparation of new legislation.
