OPOC: Government Land Use for Commercial Renewable Energy Projects Unacceptable

The Federation of Environmental Organizations of Cyprus (OPOC) has expressed its agreement with the proposed amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Promotion and Encouragement Law of 2025, but stressed that the use of government land for commercial Renewable Energy Projects (REPs) is unacceptable. OPOC supports that the energy transition must be carried out with respect for the environment and sustainable development. The Federation proposes prioritizing the installation of photovoltaic systems on the roofs of public buildings, hotels and industrial facilities, as well as on unused plots of land in designated urban areas. It rejects the licensing of REPs in State Forests, including natural reserves and protective forests. OPOC emphasizes that the development of REPs must serve the public interest, protect biodiversity and agricultural land, and contribute to a sustainable future for generations to come.
