Champions League Finalists Who Failed to Reach the Round of 16

Only two previous Champions League finalists have failed to reach the round of 16 since the introduction of that stage in 2003-2004, before Inter, who were eliminated in the play-offs by Bodø/Glimt. Inter, last season's finalists, ended up being eliminated by Bodø/Glimt with two defeats (3-1 away and 2-1 at home). Chelsea (winners in 2012) and Manchester United (finalists in 2011) are the other two finalists who failed to qualify for the next phase the following year. Chelsea were eliminated from the group stage in 2012-2013, while Manchester United failed to qualify from a relatively easy group in 2011-2012. Earlier, Bayer Leverkusen (finalists in 2002) finished last in a second group stage without a single point, while Valencia (finalists in 2001) failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season. Milan (finalists in 1995) finished 4th in Serie A and were eliminated, while Marseille (winners in 1993) were punished by UEFA due to a match-fixing scandal. The fact that finalists are eliminated so early in the competition is rare and highlights the increasing competitiveness of the Champions League.
