Cyprus Shifts Towards US Equipment Amidst Regional Alliances

Cyprus is making changes to its weapons systems, aiming for uniformity with its partner countries, through the development of collaborations in the defense sector. The Minister of Defense, Vasilis Palmas, explains that the shift towards the US is due to the need for defensive shielding and access to American technology. Joining the American programs Excess Defense Articles (EDA) and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) is a significant development. Collaboration with the US provides Cyprus with access to the American defense industry, enabling equipment upgrades and interoperability with other countries using American weapons systems. A visit by a US delegation from the Cooperative Security Organization is scheduled for January. Regarding the acquisition of weapons systems from Israel, the Minister of Defense states that they are continuously evaluated based on operational needs, financial capabilities, and military priorities. However, he clarifies that there is no plan to create a rapid reaction force with Israel or Greece. The Minister of Defense emphasizes the need to strengthen Cyprus' defense capabilities, given the geopolitical changes and increasing threats. The National Guard is in a continuous process of evolution, modernization, and strengthening, with a focus on the procurement of modern equipment, the upgrading of infrastructure, and the modernization of personnel training.
