Water Cuts Depend on Management: Ministry Transfers Responsibility to EOAs

Published February 17, 2026, 12:28

Water cuts will depend on how the Provincial Self-Governing Bodies (EOAs) manage the situation, as the decision involves a 10% reduction in flow to their networks, not immediate disruptions. The Director-General of the Ministry of Agriculture stated that if the EOAs manage properly, citizens will not be deprived of water and cuts may not be necessary. The Ministry has requested the EOAs to curb demand and will launch a public awareness campaign. Meetings have already begun between the Department of Water Development and the EOAs to determine how to implement the flow reduction without affecting consumers. Regarding the two-day water supply reduction due to desalination plant maintenance, it was clarified that this is not a production problem but scheduled maintenance. The period was chosen due to reduced demand, particularly in the tourist areas of Famagusta. For 2026, approximately 104 million cubic meters of water are planned, equivalent to the 2024 consumption. However, needs are higher due to the annual increase in demand, so EOAs have been asked to take measures to curb demand, considering the 10% supply reduction.
