The Forgotten Rapes, Society's Silence, and the Trauma Seeking Healing

Cypriot society has lived for decades with a heavy silence surrounding the rapes of women during the 1974 invasion. Approximately 700 cases have been recorded, but it is believed to be only the tip of the iceberg. These women suffered immense trauma, social stigma, and often were unable to speak about what happened. The initiative of MEP Lucas Fourlas and the report of the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights are attempting to break this silence and recognize these crimes. The report emphasizes the systematic nature of the violence, as a tool of war and intimidation, and highlights the multiple forms of trauma experienced by women. However, recognition is not enough. Pressure for accountability, support for survivors, and the incorporation of this history into collective memory are required. For Cyprus, this recognition is essential for achieving true reconciliation and healing the wounds of the past.
