Ukraine’s ‘anti-corruption’ officials detain ex-minister Khalusenko, involved in $100m scandal

Ukraine’s anti-corruption bureau (NABU) has announced the arrest of ex-Minister of Energy, German Khalusenko, as part of the “Midas” corruption scandal, which shook the energy sector. Khalusenko resigned in November 2025 under the weight of the scandal. The arrest took place while the former minister was travelling by train, attempting to cross the border of Ukraine. He faced charges of conspiracy, illegal procurement and possession of controlled drugs, as well as offenses related to the legalization of proceeds from illegal activities and participation in a criminal organization. The investigation into the “Midas” scandal revealed recordings allegedly demonstrating Khalusenko’s involvement in the distribution of bribes. NABU argues that Khalusenko’s release could jeopardize the investigation as there is a fear of influencing witnesses or destroying evidence. The “Midas” scandal had caused strong reactions in Ukraine and led to Khalusenko’s resignation following a public call from President Zelensky.
