Update of Shelters in SafeCY Application Begins

The process of updating information on shelters in the SafeCY application has begun, with the aim of being completed by the end of the week. This effort is being made as it has been found that many shelters have either been sold, converted, or demolished. The Civil Defence faced weaknesses in the control of shelters in the past. Alternative spaces for shelters are being sought, such as churches, hotels, parking areas and public spaces, and communication is being made with communities to submit proposals. 24 communities have responded and their proposals are being evaluated. In addition, there is a large number of underground spaces that have not been declared, but could be used in the event of a crisis. The Ministry of Interior has submitted a bill to upgrade the Civil Protection Mechanism and rename it the Ministry of Interior and Civil Protection. The appointment of Chief Fire Officer Nikos Longinos as National Coordinator of Civil Protection is considered positive, as he has operational experience.
