Police Warn of Viber Scams Impersonating Law Enforcement

The Cyprus Police are warning the public about new phone scams via Viber, where fraudsters impersonate police officers. In a recent case, a man called a citizen pretending to be the Chief of Police, using a video call and a police uniform (without showing his face), and managed to extract personal information and credit card details. The perpetrator used a Viber profile with a photo of a Deputy Chief of Police and the name "Cyprus Police". The Police urge the public to be particularly careful and not to respond to calls or instructions from unknown individuals claiming to be police officers via Viber. They also warn against opening links sent and not disclosing codes received on their mobile phones. If a citizen falls victim to such a scam and reveals banking details, they should immediately inform their bank to prevent unauthorized use of their data. The Police continue to investigate these cases and take measures to protect citizens from similar scams.
