President Christodoulides: Competitiveness and Middle East at the Forefront of EU Council Meeting

President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that competitiveness and the situation in the Middle East will be the dominant issues at the EU Council meeting in Brussels. These issues are linked to developments in Ukraine and their impact on energy policy and energy costs. President Christodoulides expressed optimism about achieving results in the field of competitiveness, citing progress made in defense and security as an example. Regarding the Middle East, the President emphasized the need for the EU to send a strong message about the importance of the region and to take the initiative to de-escalate the conflict. He stressed that countries in the region expect the EU to play an active role in ending the conflict and referred to support for Lebanon and the Lebanese President's proposal for talks with Israel, offering Cyprus's contribution in this direction. Furthermore, President Christodoulides mentioned the activation of Article 42(7) of the EU Treaty, pointing out the importance of the positive reactions Cyprus received during the recent crisis. Although the article was not officially activated, these reactions highlighted European solidarity and the need to strengthen the mechanisms for activating the article when necessary. Finally, President Christodoulides referred to the upcoming discussion with the UN Secretary-General, considering it important for resolving various issues. Cyprus seeks to play an active role in shaping developments in the region and promoting stability and security.
