Cyprus Approves Legislation to Combat Deepfakes

The Cypriot Parliament has approved new legislation to address the risks posed by deepfakes, technologies that enable the creation of misleading videos and images. The bill, proposed by AKEL MP Christos Christofides, aims to protect citizens from the misuse of artificial intelligence and safeguard their image, voice, and other personal data. Mr. Christofides stated that deepfakes are used for fraud, revenge, and political manipulation, citing the example of a fabricated presidential interview. Cyprus and Denmark are the first EU countries to regulate this issue through legislation. The new law enshrines citizens' right to protect their digital identity and aims to prevent the spread of deceptive content.
