AKEL Presents Legislative Proposals on Foreclosures

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, presented the party's legislative proposals regarding foreclosures, emphasizing that AKEL has submitted over 35 bills and amendments since 2014. Mr. Stefanou accused the government and parties such as DISY and DIKO of shaping a unfavorable legal framework that has led to the loss of homes and business premises by thousands of borrowers. AKEL seeks to create a framework for the protection of borrowers and guarantors, as well as to restore balance between the rights of citizens and the privileges of banks. The party's proposals include the protection of borrowers in cases of developer insolvency, the possibility of suspending foreclosure, the establishment of the right to complain about credit institutions, and the prohibition of the sale of loans for primary residences below a certain amount. Additionally, measures are proposed to protect guarantors and strengthen the powers of the Financial Commissioner.
