Cyprus Legal Service Leads EU Firearms Working Group

The Legal Service of the Republic of Cyprus presided over the first meeting of the EU Council's Working Group on Firearms in Brussels. The working group is examining a proposal for a Directive from the European Commission to address the illegal trafficking of firearms, which is a priority of the Cypriot Presidency in the field of Criminal Law. The proposed Directive aims to harmonize criminal offenses and sanctions in member states, as well as strengthen cooperation between competent authorities. It emphasizes the registration of weapon markings to improve traceability and address the illegal possession and manufacture of weapons, including digital designs for private manufacturing. Cyprus was represented by the Legal Service and the Cyprus Police.
