Malliotakis Expresses Concern Over Turkish F-16 Deployment in Cyprus

New York Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis has voiced strong concerns regarding Turkey's deployment of F-16 fighter jets in the occupied territories of Cyprus, characterizing it as provocative and a violation of US law. Ms. Malliotakis argues that this action undermines Cyprus, a key US partner, and exacerbates instability in the region. Her intervention is part of a broader effort in Congress to strengthen defense cooperation with Cyprus through the advancement of the “End Cyprus Embargo Act.” This bill aims to permanently lift the US arms embargo against the Republic of Cyprus, eliminating the need for annual renewal. Ms. Malliotakis questions Turkey's reliability regarding the use of US military equipment, citing the deployment of F-16s in Cyprus and previous overflights of Greek islands. She believes that Congress must take action to address the situation. Furthermore, the congresswoman highlighted Cyprus's critical role as a humanitarian hub for civilians fleeing the Middle East, including US citizens, and referred to the State Department's recent upgrade of its travel advisory for the country. Lifting the embargo would strengthen Cyprus's defense capabilities, the US defense industry, and stability in the region, according to Ms. Malliotakis.
