Nepal: Former Prime Minister Arrested Over Bloody Suppression of Uprising

Former Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the bloody suppression of the uprising that ousted him six months ago. The arrest was made along with his former Interior Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, as part of an investigation into the September 2025 protests, in which at least 76 people were killed and over 2,400 injured. Oli is currently hospitalized due to heart and kidney problems. An investigative committee had recommended criminal charges against Oli and other officials for their handling of the protests, which began as a demonstration against social media restrictions and corruption. The arrest comes after the inauguration of the new government led by 35-year-old Balendra Shah.
