New Cold Wave to Hit Cyprus, Dam Levels Remain Critically Low

Published January 15, 2026, 10:36

A new cold wave is expected to sweep across Cyprus from Sunday, bringing a significant drop in temperatures and increased frost, especially in mountainous areas. Temperatures have already fallen to very low levels, with the Infrastructure Station recording -2 degrees Celsius, Troodos Square -3 degrees, and Chionistra -5 degrees. Despite a slight rise expected today and tomorrow, the situation is expected to worsen from Sunday, with Monday and Tuesday being the coldest days. Local showers and snow are also forecast for the higher mountains. The concern remains high regarding the dam levels, which are at historically low levels for this time of year. Kouris Dam is at only 9.5% capacity, Asprokremmos at 9%, and Evretou at 11.9%, compared to much higher percentages during the same period last year. The overall dam capacity is around 10.6%, a figure that is causing significant anxiety. Although January is currently at 47% of its normal rainfall and the total rainfall for the season is at 70%, officials emphasize the need for prolonged and gradual rainfall to substantially increase reserves. Hopes are now pinned on the melting of snow and future storms to increase inflows into the dams. The situation is being closely monitored, as water shortages could have serious consequences for agriculture and daily life.
