EU Bans Destruction of Unsold Clothes and Shoes to Promote Sustainability

The European Commission has approved new measures to prevent the destruction of unsold clothing, accessories and footwear, under the Eco-design for Sustainable Products (ESPR) Regulation. The measures aim to promote reuse and recycling, reducing waste and environmental impact. The destruction of products will only be allowed for safety reasons or due to damage. Businesses will be required to disclose the quantities of unsold products they discard, with the aim of reducing administrative burden. Each year in Europe, it is estimated that 4-9% of unsold textile products are destroyed, causing approximately 5.6 million tons of CO2 emissions. The ban will apply to large companies from July 2026 and to medium-sized companies from July 2030. Commissioner Jessika Roswall stated that the measures will accelerate the transition of the industry to sustainable practices.
