New Obstacles for Units in Dekelia – Suppliers Surprised Us – Will be Delayed by Four Years

Delays are expected in the installation of new units at the Dekelia power plant, as the manufacturers informed the EAC (Electricity Authority of Cyprus) of an 18-month extension in the supply, resulting in a four-year delay in delivery. The chairman of the EAC board, Giorgos Petrou, expressed his surprise at the delay, noting that the company had been assured of timely delivery. Regarding the arrival of natural gas, the EAC, as a 30% shareholder in ETYFA, was informed of a six-month extension in the planning by Technip. The EAC is considering deploying specialists to ETYFA to accelerate the process. Despite the delays, the EAC estimates that it will be able to meet energy needs with the installation of storage batteries. However, there are concerns for 2029, when units are expected to be decommissioned from Dekelia. It is noted that the units in Dekelia operate on diesel, while the Vasilikos station can operate on natural gas, however the operation of Vasilikos cannot exist without the operation of Dekelia. The EAC does not foresee any supply problems, except for unforeseen failures. Also, a study for the electrical interconnection is underway, which has been frozen until the government’s final decisions.
