New Research Shows Mosquitoes are Turning to Humans as Biodiversity Declines

New research suggests that mosquitoes are changing their feeding habits and increasingly turning to humans due to biodiversity loss. The study, conducted in the Atlantic Forest, showed that mosquitoes prefer to feed on human blood, even when other hosts, such as birds and mammals, are available. This shift increases the risk of disease transmission, including yellow fever, dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya virus. Researchers used light traps and DNA analysis to determine the feeding preferences of mosquitoes, finding that most blood meals came from humans.
