M. Mousiouttas at SEK Conference: Pension System a Test and Opportunity

Minister of Labor, Marinos Mousiouttas, described the pension reform as the biggest test but also the biggest opportunity for Cyprus, aiming to create a sustainable system that rewards a lifetime of work and supports future generations. He spoke at the 30th Pan-Cypriot Conference of SEK, emphasizing the importance of social dialogue and realism in the discussion of the reform. The Minister set June 2026 as a milestone for the completion of the process and parliamentary discussion, with the aim of implementing the reform in 2027. He stressed that implementation requires cooperation and responsibility from all stakeholders. The pension reform was characterized as the “flagship” of the Ministry’s social agenda, aiming for dignity after retirement, adequacy of pensions, sustainability of the social security system, intergenerational fairness, and strengthening citizens’ trust. Mousiouttas emphasized that pensions are a mirror of social justice and that the reform must ensure a fair and sustainable system for all, including young people entering the labor market. He also referred to the strengthening of collective bargaining and the submission of a bill for the minimum wage within March.
