Bangladesh: Khaleda Zia, First Female Prime Minister, Dies

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia died today at the age of 80, plunging the country into mourning. Zia, the first female prime minister in Bangladesh's history, served three terms (1991-1996, for three months in 1996, and 2001-2006). She was the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since 1984 and was widely expected to be a candidate in the 2026 elections. Her son, Tariq Rahman, who recently returned from exile in London, is expected to take over the leadership of the party and contest the prime ministership. Zia had been suffering from serious health problems in recent years, including cirrhosis of the liver and diabetes, and was hospitalized in intensive care in November with a lung infection.
