Baby with Shaken Baby Syndrome at Makarios Hospital – Has Brain Hemorrhage

A three-month-old baby is in critical condition at Makarios Hospital, intubated and with a brain hemorrhage. He has been diagnosed with Shaken Baby Syndrome and his 28-year-old father has been arrested. The father is being investigated for offenses related to causing grievous bodily harm, child endangerment, child abuse under the age of 16, and other negligent acts intended to cause bodily harm. The President of the Cyprus Pediatric Society, Michalis Anastasiadis, commented that such cases are particularly painful for doctors. He explained that Shaken Baby Syndrome can cause serious brain damage, either due to accident or abuse. Mr. Anastasiadis stressed that babies have defense mechanisms, but great care is needed when handling them. He also pointed out that accidents are the leading cause of death in childhood, including falls, burns, and traffic accidents. This incident highlights the need for awareness regarding Shaken Baby Syndrome and the prevention of child abuse.
