Incorrect Voltage on EAC Network Causes Damage to Electrical Appliances

Published January 16, 2026, 08:34

An incorrect voltage on the EAC network caused damage to electrical appliances in homes in Palaimetocho, Nicosia. Giorgos Kyriakou, President of the Association of Licensed Electrical Contractors, stated that this phenomenon repeats 2-3 times a year due to the extent of the network. However, the biggest problem is the inadequate compensation received by citizens. Mr. Kyriakou recounted moving stories of Palaimetocho residents who are unable to cover their electricity needs and are forced to live in extreme poverty. He also described cases where the operation of vital medical equipment was interrupted due to the incorrect voltage. Furthermore, he referred to incidents that occurred during the installation of smart meters, where errors in installation caused damage to electrical appliances. Despite assurances from EAC and Members of Parliament, the compensation paid to citizens is often much lower than the actual cost of the damage. Mr. Kyriakou calls on the government to take responsibility and adequately compensate citizens for the damage caused by EAC's incorrect handling, acting not as an insurance company, but as a responsible body.
