Taxi Drivers Threaten Mobilization Unless Issues are Addressed

Professional urban taxi drivers are warning of ongoing strike action from March 10th unless immediate solutions are found to the problems facing the industry. The Pan-Cypriot Coordinating Committee of Urban Taxis has sent a letter to relevant state bodies, denouncing the illegal activity of private vehicles operating as "pirate" taxis, as well as "customer poaching" by unscrupulous individuals and foreigners. Taxi drivers express reservations about the operation of ride-hailing apps, which they believe violate the established status of urban taxis and create unfair competition. They also report the existence of misleading websites advertising taxi services without a license. They are calling for stricter enforcement of legislation, increased controls, and expanded powers for the supervisors of the Department of Road Transport. At the same time, they mention the increased operating costs and the lack of infrastructure in taxi parking areas at Larnaca and Paphos airports, requesting an increase in designated pick-up locations and access to the bus lane. Finally, they denounce the lack of basic infrastructure in parking areas, such as trash cans and toilets, demanding humane working conditions and respect.
