Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak in Cyprus: Experts and Vaccines Arrive

Cyprus is facing a serious crisis due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, resulting in the culling of 13,156 animals, including 260 cows and thousands of sheep and goats. Veterinary services are fully mobilized, and the arrival of a team of European experts and the first batch of vaccines is expected. Vaccinations will begin immediately within a 10-kilometer radius of Oroklini, aiming to create a protective zone and prevent further spread of the disease. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, is in Brussels for talks and to secure financial aid from the EU, which responded promptly to Cyprus's request. The arrival of the experts and vaccines is a critical step in protecting livestock and the primary sector.
