Meloni: “No Request to Use Bases, We Are Not at War”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that Italy has not received any request to use its military bases and does not wish to become involved in a war. She emphasized that the use of the bases by American aircraft participating in bombings would require the approval of the Italian parliament, in accordance with the bilateral agreements that have been concluded. Meloni confirmed that Italy, like other European countries (United Kingdom, France, Germany), intends to send aid to the Gulf countries, mainly to strengthen air defense, due to the presence of tens of thousands of Italians in the region who need protection. She highlighted the vital importance of the Gulf for supplies. The Prime Minister expressed her concern about the “chaotic reaction” of Iran, which is bombing countries that had tried to reach an agreement on its nuclear program, warning of the risk of escalation. She reiterated that France has nuclear deterrence, but European strategic autonomy does not imply European control of the French nuclear arsenal. Finally, Meloni stressed that Italy respects bilateral agreements and that the use of the bases will only be done in accordance with them, while reiterating her position that Italy does not wish to become involved in a war.
