A new study involving over 50,000 children in the US has found that four or more hours a day in front of screens is associated with a higher frequency of mental health problems. The study, published in Nature Portfolio, highlights that physical activity is a major protective factor, accounting for up to 39% of the association between screen time and mental health problems. Researchers express particular concern about the increased likelihood of depression, which rises by 61% with excessive screen time. Additionally, there is a 45% increase in the risk of anxiety, 24% in behavioral/conduct problems, and 21% in ADHD. Dr. Hannah Nearney points out that treating depression at a young age can be challenging and have negative long-term effects. The study emphasizes the importance of promoting physical activity as a means of preventing mental health problems in children. Given the challenges of treating depression, prevention by addressing risk factors such as excessive screen time is critical. The study's findings suggest that parents and guardians should be aware of the amount of time their children spend in front of screens and encourage participation in physical activities and other pursuits that promote mental well-being. The study provides strong evidence for the need to limit screen time and promote a healthy lifestyle to protect children’s mental health.
